The castle was erected on a slope above the famous Warm Spring in Vrnjačka Banja, commissioned by General Jovan Belimarković (1827–1906), a distinguished Minister of King Milan Obrenović and Regent to the minor King Aleksandar Obrenović.

• Period of Construction: Between 1882 and 1889.
• Architectural Inspiration: It was designed after the elegant Polish villas of Northern Italy, in the spirit of Romantic Historicism with pronounced Renaissance elements.
• Material: White marble from Belimarković’s quarry, below Mount Goč, was used for the construction.

This lavish edifice, also adorned with an attractive two-flight staircase made of white marble, is considered today to be the oldest building in Vrnjačka Banja, besides the church.

After generations of heirs lived in it, Belimarković Castle was purchased in the 1970s and declared a cultural monument of great importance for the Republic of Serbia.

Today, the castle serves as the Castle of Culture and houses the Homeland Museum of Vrnjačka Banja.

Belimarković Castle remains a symbol of elegance and a cultural-historical jewel, making it an unmissable destination for all visitors to Vrnjačka Banja.

In addition to the reconstruction of the school itself, which should have the following contents: a multi-purpose hall, a souvenir shop, a meeting room, an office, a sanitary block, a kitchenette and a warehouse, proposals were also made for the activation of 2 auxiliary buildings, which will be organized for the purpose of catering.

It is also planned for the yard and green areas to be arranged, as well as the reconstruction of the existing stone fence and entrance gates.

When creating the project, we adhered to the measures prescribed by the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Belgrade, as well as all other regulations and laws that regulate the area in question.

Namely, the “Guard House”is one of the most valuable buildings of the Topčider Military Complex (“Guard Complex”) in Belgrade, in terms of culture, history and architecture, and this entire area, together with numerous other buildings and monuments, was declared a spatial cultural property “Topčider”.

The building of the “Guard House” was erected in 1925 on the slope towards “Rakovica” road as part of the King’s Guard Complex, which was spatially shaped after the Second World War, most likely according to the project of an unknown author, although some researchers attribute it to the Russian architects Vinogradov and Lukomski.

Previous research works included an examination of the condition of the sculptures at the Guard House, which are located on the facades of the building, and then a proposal was made for their rehabilitation and replacement. In this sense, detailed technical documentation of all sculptures, nine of them in total, was prepared, as well as degradation mapping with the professional help of biologists in order to register the plants, fungi and microorganisms present, while static rehabilitation and verification, as well as material testing, was entrusted to civil engineers.

The permanent team of DE Architecture worked on the project with the help of excellent experts, our external collaborators, and we also owe a great deal of gratitude to the experts of the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments for their help in collecting data.

In the English-speaking world, the term “green belt” is used for parts of urban areas that must contain greenery, and in which construction is prohibited at the same time.

The scope of the competition has two dominant characteristics: 1 – it represents a green zone within the city environment and 2 – construction is prohibited in the largest part, because it is a protected cultural property.

Bearing this in mind, as well as the fact that it is an industrial complex, whose synonym in Serbian is “factory circle”, we formed the basic guiding ideas and basic concept: WE PRESERVE AND IMPROVE HERITAGE, PRESERVE AND IMPROVE GREEN ZONES, CLOSE THE CIRCLE OF SELF-SUSTAINABILITY, transforming the abandoned “factory circle” into a modern multifunctional space.
